Our CatholicCare Social Enterprise Program exists to create a positive impact through offering employment pathways for vulnerable people in our community.
The program has a café that also offers event catering. This initiative aims to deliver sustainable and professional services while employing individuals in our local community.
For most people, obtaining employment is about more than just having a job. It’s an opportunity to gain experience, fulfil their needs, develop financial independence and create a connection with their community and team.
The café and catering initiative works in conjunction with other CatholicCare programs, such as our Refugee Hub and the Supported Independent Living Program, as well as in collaboration with other local networks, to identify employment opportunities for community members.
As part of the usual employment process, candidates are interviewed, screened and onboarded before commencing work in our Social Enterprises. They are then supervised and trained to work in these services, and encouraged to grow and thrive in a supported employment environment.
Our valued staff come from all walks of life, with a variety of backgrounds, experiences and skill sets to share. At CatholicCare, everybody is welcome and our dedicated Social Enterprise team are committed to delivering high-quality professional standards of customer service while contributing to their community and its people
By engaging with our services, you are choosing to support meaningful opportunities for our staff and the programs we deliver. All profits from the cafe business go towards funding other social justice programs – such as our Community Kitchens and Refugee Hub – that enhance our capacity to support the community where it needs it the most.

CatholicCare’s Social Enterprise is currently operating in the Newcastle region:
CatholicCare is now the new operator of the onsite café and function centre at the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle grounds on Hunter Street Newcastle.
The café offers employment and training to vulnerable young people and people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds as part of our Social Enterprise Program.
The team also operate two onsite function rooms that deliver catering for a variety of events.
Social Enterprises are businesses that exist to create a fairer and more sustainable world. To be a classified as a social enterprise, the business must do three things:
1) Have a defined primary social, cultural or environmental purpose with a public or community benefit
2) Derive a substantial portion of their income from trade
3) Invest efforts and resources into their purpose such that public/community benefit outweighs private benefits.
